Declutter Your Mind & Life

A consistent and common problem experience by nearly all the women that I work with is that despite being competent, smart, capable women that are actively taking on life, they are feel stuck in overwhelm and are experiencing some level of anxiety. An anxiety that in many cases, has always been apart of their life or developed following traumatic incidents many years ago. Now in their 40s the constant sense of not being in control of their life and their energy is impacting on their enjoyment of life.

They are all living in that weird space of feeling super busy yet feeling like they are treading water, going nowhere fast. And they are exhausted from doing it.

You might know that feeling. I certainly do, and for someone who always felt like I was meant to be achieving more, that feeling of treading water was so deflating and frustrating.

The crazy thing is that in order to get yourself out of the hole that you feel stuck in, you then go and heap more on your ‘to do’ list. Because as smart, action-takers you think that you just need to know more, do more or be more and that will get you to where you want to be.

  • You sign up for another course
  • You buy yet another self-development book
  • You enrol in another class
  • You do more meditation/yoga/exercise/??
  • And you take on more responsibility

Of course all this simply clutters your mind even more and you think you’re a failure because you are doing all the right things but still feeling like you are on a fast train to nowhere.

The thing is, to get more you have to do less.swimming-pool-14

To find peace you have to let stuff go.

Let go of the mind clutter.

Let go of the incessant ‘have to’, ‘should do’, ‘need to’.

Let go of the incessant ‘woulda’, ‘coulda’, ‘shoulda’.

 

Give yourself space to breath.

Give yourself space to find moments of clarity.

The solution to whatever is troubling you will never be found in a cluttered mind.

It can be difficult to know where to start with de-cluttering your life or your mind. Just like when you decide to have a spring clean of your house you either:

  1. Don’t know where to start because it looks such a big job so you fluff around then just give up
  2. You start in the bedroom, then get distracted and clean a few kitchen draws, then a bit of the paperwork in the office. And then you think ‘I will do the rest later’ but never get around to it.
  3. You get organised but then can’t bring yourself to let go of things and end up keeping everything anyway.

It’s time to de-clutter your mind and your life.

It is in the space that is left that you can begin to find direction and joy.

 Often the first step can be decluttering your physical space. Stop holding on to stuff that carries negative energy from the past. Create space for movement of positive energy in and around your house by selling or giving away what you know longer need.

Create space in your mind by including daily rituals that help calm your busy mind. Mindfulness meditation is a great way to find clarity and focus through bringing your attention to the breath. Some people prefer guided meditations and this can be a great way for those that are new to meditation to begin. The important thing is not how long you can sit in meditation but that you make this a consistent activity that you do everyday. Even if it is only 2 minutes a day to start with you will begin to feel more focus and calm infiltrating your day.

If you are finding it difficult to let go of attachment to negative thoughts or worries, it can be useful to introduce a journalling practice into you daily ritual. This doesn’t need to be complex or deep, it could simply include spending 10 minutes prior to bed writing about your day, what annoyed you, what was challenging and what you are grateful for. Get it out of your head and let yourself sleep more peacefully.
